As Jillian and I were heading in to store tonight we were met by the lovely Salvation Army volunteer who stands outside our local QFC every winter. He is such a nice man - it's hard not to put something in the bucket every time you visit the store. As Jillian and I were shopping I decided this might be a good opportunity to tell her a little bit about what the Salvation Army is all about.
Mom: "Jillian, do you know what that man outside is collecting money for?"
Jillian (excitedly): "A new house!"
Mom: "Good guess, but no. He is collecting money for families - moms and dads and kids - who don't have the money to buy food and presents for Christmas. We can share some of our money with these families by putting it in the bucket."
Jillian (thoughtfully): "Mom, I am going to go home and get some money out of my piggybank, put it in a bowl, cover it and then bring it to put in the bucket."
I almost cried right then and there. My emotions were just as much about the fact that Jillian understood the concept of giving as they were about her decision to actually give. I was so proud!
On our way out of the store I gave Jillian four quarters to put in the bucket. When she did, the lovely man explained to her exactly what the Salvation Army does and thanked her for her donation. As we were walking away I was asked by King5 to comment on the Salvation Army's new "Text to Give" program. I never thought my comments would actually make it on the air (I was totally caught off guard and walked away thinking my comments were less than eloquent), so when a friend let me know that he thought he just saw me on the news I was very surprised. Thankfully upon watching I realized that my comments made sense (unlike the fellow after me!) - whew. Check it out!

I'm also quoted in the article below, although I never said anything about looking forward to "allowing" Jillian put money in the bucket every year. Don't put words in my mouth Tonya Mosley!

Nice! You are a local celebrity now!
Hah! My aunt who lives in Olympia even saw it. I'm sure to get a movie deal any day now... :)
I guess the phone is ringing off the hook for that movie deal, right?!!!! That's nice that Jillian understands the concept. Great seeing you Molly.
Love, Auntie Sue
Way to go, Molls!
